What is a park steward?

When Seattle created off-leash areas, they formed an agreement with Citizens for Off-Leash Areas (COLA) to manage the parks. As part of this agreement, COLA provides park stewards to manage the park and serve as a liaison between the Seattle Parks Department and the park users. Park Stewards are volunteers just like all other COLA members.

As your park steward, I help ensure that the Northacres Park Agreement is followed (both by the Parks Department and by us users), and that we comply with the laws regarding operation of our off-leash area. The regulations that we must heed have their origins in the park rules for Seattle parks as well as the municipal ordinance governing off-leash areas. The upshot is that I help make sure we keep the park clean, that we obey leash and scoop laws, and that we preserve the environmental heritage that has been given to us at Northacres.

You can help us keep our off-leash areas by joining COLA and stopping by any of our monthly work parties.
